What Is a Block Clamp? How WingSet® Transforms Retaining Wall Installation

WingSet®

If your crew is setting one block at a time, WingSet® changes that equation entirely. With WingSet®, that same crew sets 4 to 6 blocks per lift — mechanically, safely, every single time. WingSet® places each block in its final position in one action. The block is positively engaged — it cannot slip.

What Is a Block Clamp?

A block clamp is a mechanical lifting attachment that allows an excavator to move modular retaining wall blocks from one location to another. Some clamps grip the outside of the block and rely on clamping force against the block face — which can slip, especially under load or in wet conditions. They are effective at moving product, but do not necessarily set blocks in their final desired position, leaving ground crew to manually adjust each block after placement.

The Problem with Traditional Methods

Traditional retaining wall installation relies heavily on manual labor. Crews manually lift and carry 85+ lb blocks, placing strain on arms, backs, and legs while navigating uneven terrain and tripping hazards. NIOSH data shows that manually lifting and positioning blocks of this weight creates a Lifting Index associated with significant risk of musculoskeletal injury — back and shoulder strains and crush injuries are common on block wall job sites.

How WingSet® Is Different

WingSet® is a patented block lift system (U.S. Patent No. 11,535,495 | Canadian Patent No. 3,126,767) engineered specifically for modular retaining wall installation. WingSet® is positively engaged with the block — it cannot slip. Here is the key difference: attach 2 WingSets to the spreader bar and you are setting 4 blocks per lift. Attach 3 WingSets and you are setting 6 blocks per lift. A typical three-person crew operates the system: the excavator operator controls the machine, one worker at the pallet hooks up 3 to 6 blocks at a time, and one worker at the wall releases WingSet® once the blocks are set in their exact desired location — that's it.

Key Benefits for Contractors

WingSet® reduces the number of crew members needed for block placement by up to 50%, dramatically cutting labor costs on large retaining wall projects. It also eliminates the most dangerous manual handling tasks, reducing workers' compensation exposure. Contractors report faster installation times and improved block alignment compared to manual methods. Most importantly: while a competitor making individual lifts is setting one block at a time, a WingSet® contractor sets 4 to 6 in one lift.

Is WingSet® Right for Your Project?

WingSet® is ideal for contractors installing any modular retaining wall block. No special equipment modifications are required. Call 617.823.1299 for a demonstration.
