The NIOSH Revised Lifting Equation is the gold standard for evaluating manual lifting risk in the workplace. For retaining wall installation crews, applying the equation to typical block-handling tasks reveals Lifting Index values that should alarm any safety-conscious contractor. WingSet® drives that index below 1.0 — and sets 4 to 6 blocks per lift while doing it.
What Is the NIOSH Lifting Index?
The NIOSH Lifting Index (LI) is a ratio of the actual load lifted to the Recommended Weight Limit calculated by the NIOSH equation. An LI of 1.0 means the task is at the recommended limit. An LI above 1.0 indicates increasing risk of musculoskeletal injury. An LI above 3.0 is considered high risk and indicates that most workers performing the task are at significant risk of injury.
Calculating LI for Retaining Wall Blocks
A standard retaining wall block weighing 85+ lbs, lifted from ground level to waist height with a typical horizontal reach, produces a Lifting Index in the high-risk range under the NIOSH equation. For heavier blocks in the 120–180 lb range, the LI climbs significantly higher. When you factor in the frequency of lifts on a typical installation day — 50 to 200 blocks — cumulative exposure is extreme.
The Cost of High Lifting Index Tasks
Workers' compensation claims for back injuries in construction average $40,000–$80,000 per claim when surgery is required. Lost productivity, retraining costs, and insurance premium increases add significantly to that figure. A single serious back injury can cost a small contractor more than the entire WingSet® system many times over.
How WingSet® Addresses the NIOSH LI Problem
WingSet® eliminates the manual lifting phase of block installation entirely. Unlike a traditional clamp that grips the outside of a block and can slip, WingSet® is positively engaged with the block — it cannot slip or be dropped. A typical three-person crew operates the system: the excavator operator controls the machine, one worker at the pallet hooks up 3 to 6 blocks at a time, and one worker at the wall releases WingSet® once the blocks are set in their exact desired location. This reduces the Lifting Index for the most hazardous tasks to well below 1.0.
Documentation and Compliance
Contractors using WingSet® can document their NIOSH LI compliance as part of their OSHA safety program. This is increasingly important for public works contracts, which often require written ergonomics programs. Contact WingSet® at 617.823.1299 for documentation support and on-site safety orientations.
See WingSet® on Your Job Site — No Obligation
We offer free on-site demonstrations. You won't be imposing — we love doing this.
There's nothing we enjoy more than throwing a couple of WingSets in the truck, heading out to a job site, and showing a crew exactly what's possible. Invite us out — we'll do the rest.
